Massage and brain development in infants

Massage and brain development in infants

It has been know for thousands year that massage help children’s development with many proposed mechanisms. Guzzetta and colleagues reported that body masage in preterm infants accelerate brain development. The infants received body massage had accelerated maturation of electroencephalographic (electronic brain wave) activity and visal function, in particular visual acuity, these change was associated with their higher blood IGF-1, the most important growth factor stimulating body growth. This is confirmed in their animal study (rat pups) which also found higher IGF-1 in the animal’s brain cortex.
